Tired of writing about bad news as a producer at a news station, Claire Merrick began using her free time to write urban fantasy stories. She attended FantaSci in Durham, hoping to learn from authors about the business side of publishing. One of the guests, Kevin Ikenberry, asked if she had a manuscript. Then he pointed at some of the editors in attendance and gave her a challenge: "Send them your manuscript within the next ten days." The result was an offer from Cannon Publishing to publish her first fantasy novel, scheduled to release in 2025. Merrick grew up with a love for mythology and Nancy Drew mysteries. She spent most of her life in North Carolina, inspired by the old textile mills, train depots, and trips to the mountains not far from home.
